She’s That Girl….speaking at the House of Lords!

She's that Girl
On Friday 16th November around 200 participants from across the UK, were given the opportunity to have their say on some of the key barriers facing girls and young women in the UK and around the world, and the solutions that should be put in place to ensure they are able to achieve their potential.  2018 marks the 60th anniversary of the passing of the life peerages Act 1958, which enabled women to be members of the house of Lords. We're extremely proud to say that a group of girls and Youth Worker T from Getaway Girls were part of…

She's that Girl
Hi, my name’s, Naimah. Day of the Girl is great, an opportunity for us to raise awareness of the challenges girls face in day to day life such as accessing their rights and gender inequality, but most importantly it is a day to celebrate the empowerment of young girls worldwide.  I was a part of the Global Girls project at Getaway girls, as a 13-year-old when I first started I enjoyed my time here, it was an escape route from school once a week, meeting and talking to girls in my peer group sharing the same passion to discuss the…

She’s That Girl….Who Had a Dream

She's that Girl
Well we have come to the end of our ‘100 dreams, 100 days’ project which involved talking to 100 young women from across Leeds about sharing their dreams for the future.  We posted each one on Twitter, using the hashtag #100dreams100days. The 100 day-long campaign was inspired by a quote endorsed by women’s rights advocate and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, who said “girls with dreams become women with vision” at the UN Women’s Conference on International Women’s Day in 2015. Flavia Docherty, director at Getaway Girls said: We wanted to commemorate 100 years of women winning the right to…

My name is Sharandeep Flora and I am 18 years old. I have been coming to Getaway Girls for 4 years and now I am a peer-educator here. I'm also a DJ and have been doing this since being involved with Sister Sound Salon, a multi-media group at Getaway Girls. As a peer-educator at Getaway Girls, I believe that our ideas for the “Women making a change” project are important because young women can feel inspired. Learning about the suffragettes will make young women want to continue to campaign for equality. I am also a part of the Girls Forum, a safe place for girls…

A big THANK YOU to the wonderful people at Boots for inviting us to have our very own pamper session as part of their in store Children In Need event, we had such a FANTASTIC time. It was fab to have our makeup done by the professionals, they taught us new techniques and went through different products that best suited our skin types. We even got a free goodie bag with all of the make-up that they had used, we can’t wait to try everything that we’ve learnt when we get home. May be we should change our name to…

She’s that girl……who builds rafts!

Today we went raft building at Yeadon Tarn.  When we arrived our mentor showed us our equipment for the rafts, being only 4 barrels, 2 pieces of wood and rope.  He showed us how to do a figure of eight rope and guided us though building process.  We eventually got our life jackets on and the next step was to get in the water! Everyone was nervous as the weather was sunny but still cold.  It was described as "fun and the day filled with screams and laughter" which helped team building skills. Majority of us fell in the water…
